Getting Around: Public Transport
Using public transport in an English-speaking country requires knowing the right vocabulary for tickets, routes, and problems. This lesson covers buses, trains, and the underground (subway/metro).
Key Transport Vocabulary
| Term (UK) | Term (US) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Underground / Tube | Subway | City metro system |
| Return ticket | Round-trip ticket | Ticket for both ways |
| Single | One-way | Ticket for one direction |
| Platform | Track | Where you board the train |
| Carriage / Coach | Car | Section of a train |
| Guard / Conductor | Conductor | Staff member on train |
| Timetable | Schedule | When services run |
Buying Tickets
| Situation | Phrase |
|---|---|
| At the ticket office | ”A single/return to [destination], please.” |
| Asking about fares | ”How much is a return to [place]?” |
| Off-peak / Peak | ”Is there a cheaper off-peak fare?” |
| Validation | ”Do I need to validate my ticket?” |
| Oyster / contactless (London) | “Can I use contactless on this line?” |
In London, “tap in and tap out” with a contactless card or Oyster card is the standard way to pay. You must tap both when boarding and when leaving — forgetting to tap out results in the maximum charge being applied.
On the Bus
- “Does this bus go to [place]?”
- “Which stop do I get off at for [destination]?”
- “Could you let me know when we reach [stop], please?”
- “How frequent is this service?”
On the Train
Useful phrases when boarding and during the journey:
- “Is this seat taken?” / “Is anyone sitting here?”
- “What time does this train arrive in [city]?”
- “Do I need to change trains?”
- “Which platform for the train to [city]?”
Common Announcements
| Announcement | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ”The next station is…” | Next stop |
| ”Mind the gap” (UK) | Watch the space between train and platform |
| ”This train is running approximately X minutes late.” | Delay information |
| ”All change, please.” | Everyone must leave — this is the last stop |
| ”Please have your ticket ready for inspection.” | Ticket check |
Do not board a train if the doors are closing — wait for the next one. Forcing the doors is dangerous and can delay the whole service. In London: do not hold the Tube doors.
