Dangling Modifiers
What is a Dangling Modifier?
A dangling modifier is a phrase that doesn’t clearly modify any word in the sentence. It “dangles” without a proper connection.
The Problem
Dangling Modifier
❌ Walking to the store, the rain started.
Who was walking? Not the rain! The subject is missing.
Fixed
✓ Walking to the store, I got caught in the rain. ✓ While I was walking to the store, the rain started.
Common Types
1. Participial Phrases
Dangling:
- ❌ Exhausted from the hike, the bed looked inviting. (The bed wasn’t exhausted!)
Fixed:
- ✓ Exhausted from the hike, I thought the bed looked inviting.
- ✓ Because I was exhausted from the hike, the bed looked inviting.
2. Infinitive Phrases
Dangling:
- ❌ To win the game, practice is essential. (Practice doesn’t win games—players do!)
Fixed:
- ✓ To win the game, you must practice.
- ✓ If you want to win the game, practice is essential.
3. Prepositional Phrases
Dangling:
- ❌ At the age of five, my father taught me to swim. (Your father was five?)
Fixed:
- ✓ At the age of five, I learned to swim from my father.
- ✓ When I was five, my father taught me to swim.
How to Fix Dangling Modifiers
Method 1: Add the Missing Subject
Dangling: Running quickly, the bus was caught. Fixed: Running quickly, I caught the bus.
Method 2: Rewrite the Modifier as a Clause
Dangling: Walking through the park, the birds were singing. Fixed: As I walked through the park, the birds were singing.
Method 3: Restructure the Sentence
Dangling: To bake a cake, eggs are needed. Fixed: You need eggs to bake a cake.
Misplaced vs. Dangling
Misplaced Modifier (wrong position)
- ❌ She almost ate the whole cake. (She almost ate?)
- ✓ She ate almost the whole cake.
Dangling Modifier (no word to modify)
- ❌ Having finished dinner, the dishes were washed.
- ✓ Having finished dinner, we washed the dishes.

Ask: “Who is doing this action?”
If the answer isn’t the subject of the main clause, you have a dangling modifier.
A dangling modifier has no clear subject to attach to. Ask yourself: who or what is doing the action in the modifying phrase? That subject must be the grammatical subject of the main clause.
