Dangling Modifiers

What is a Dangling Modifier?

A dangling modifier is a phrase that doesn’t clearly modify any word in the sentence. It “dangles” without a proper connection.

The Problem

Dangling Modifier

Walking to the store, the rain started.

Who was walking? Not the rain! The subject is missing.

Fixed

Walking to the store, I got caught in the rain. ✓ While I was walking to the store, the rain started.

Common Types

1. Participial Phrases

Dangling:

  • Exhausted from the hike, the bed looked inviting. (The bed wasn’t exhausted!)

Fixed:

  • Exhausted from the hike, I thought the bed looked inviting.
  • Because I was exhausted from the hike, the bed looked inviting.

2. Infinitive Phrases

Dangling:

  • To win the game, practice is essential. (Practice doesn’t win games—players do!)

Fixed:

  • To win the game, you must practice.
  • If you want to win the game, practice is essential.

3. Prepositional Phrases

Dangling:

  • At the age of five, my father taught me to swim. (Your father was five?)

Fixed:

  • When I was five, my father taught me to swim.

How to Fix Dangling Modifiers

Method 1: Add the Missing Subject

Dangling: Running quickly, the bus was caught. Fixed: Running quickly, I caught the bus.

Method 2: Rewrite the Modifier as a Clause

Dangling: Walking through the park, the birds were singing. Fixed: As I walked through the park, the birds were singing.

Method 3: Restructure the Sentence

Dangling: To bake a cake, eggs are needed. Fixed: You need eggs to bake a cake.

Quick Check

Ask: “Who is doing this action?”

If the answer isn’t the subject of the main clause, you have a dangling modifier.

A dangling modifier has no clear subject to attach to. Ask yourself: who or what is doing the action in the modifying phrase? That subject must be the grammatical subject of the main clause.
