Essay Structure
| Part | German | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction | Einleitung | Hook, background, thesis statement |
| Body paragraphs | Hauptteil | Arguments and evidence |
| Conclusion | Schluss | Summary and final thoughts |
The Introduction
A good introduction has three parts:
- Hook - Catches the reader’s attention
- Background - Provides context
- Thesis statement - States your main argument
Example:
Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time (hook). Rising temperatures have led to extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and biodiversity loss (background). This essay argues that immediate action is necessary to prevent irreversible environmental damage (thesis).
Body Paragraphs
Each paragraph should:
- Start with a topic sentence
- Provide evidence (facts, statistics, quotes)
- Include analysis (explain the evidence)
- End with a transition to the next point
Academic Language
| Avoid | Use Instead |
|---|---|
| I think… | It can be argued that… |
| Lots of | Numerous / A significant number of |
| Good/Bad | Beneficial/Detrimental |
| Shows | Demonstrates / Indicates |
| Big | Substantial / Considerable |
The Conclusion
A conclusion should:
- Restate the thesis (in different words)
- Summarize main points
- Provide final insight or call to action
- NOT introduce new information
A strong academic essay always separates the main claim from supporting evidence. State your thesis clearly in the introduction so readers know exactly what you will argue.
